About Us

Our Name:

Leavitt’s Mill Free Health Center was named for an historic grist/saw mill built in Buxton in the late 18th century by Joseph Leavitt…and like the grist mills of old, was a community effort, built by volunteers for the good of the areas’ uninsured residents.

 Our Mission:

To improve the health of the community by providing FREE healthcare services to persons who have no insurance or inadequate insurance and by sponsoring health promotion activities for the entire community.

Our Vision:

We believe that professional, respectful, and appropriate healthcare should be equally available to all.

Our Philosophy:

Education, teaching, learning, practical experience, all play a very important role at LMFHC. It is through appropriate teaching that we can help our patients achieve wellness. It is through providing a clinical setting for future health care providers that we may ensure well trained, caring professionals. We also believe that as a teaching and learning center we can effect some change in the healthcare system and work towards promoting healthcare reform.

Care at LMFHC is based on the premise that the patient is the center of the health care team, and as such is encouraged to make informed decisions about care, and about healthy lifestyles. Using a “whole person” approach, your provider will work with you to help you overcome illness and injury, and work towards an increased state of wellness in your life. We will encourage a variety of ideas and will involve a number of disciplines, with a focus on prevention. In the long run, we expect to help you not only improve your health, but to save time and money.

Our primary care services are offered Free of charge to any uninsured person or persons and are supported entirely by donations of time, services and dollars.

Our Donors:

LMFHC donors are from the local community and include patients, local businesses, professionals and tradesmen who have volunteered their time, energy, skills and money. The center is equipped with state of the art medical equipment and supplies thanks to the generosity of a number of businesses, individuals and by private and municipal grants. The Center sponsors several fundraising events with all funds designated for patient services.

Our Health Care Team:

LMFHC is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteer health care professionals including Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Counselors, and Dental Hygienists.

In addition, there are several health care providers offsite who provide important pro-bono services, e.g, Optometrists, Dentists, Chiropractors, etc. LMFHC maintains a network of medical specialty consultants for referrals.

During the academic year, the LMFHC team may also have many student members and interns from local colleges, universities and career training programs. These include: the University of Southern Maine, the University of New England, St. Joseph’s College and Seacoast Careers. Students and interns come from across many disciplines including: Nursing, Social Work, Dental Hygiene and Medical assisting.

Through partnerships with the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, Maine Health, Nordx, CarePartners and other social service agencies we are able to offer you the best possible care.

Our Staff:

LMFHC has paid part-time administrative and medical assistant support staff and a wealth of volunteers who assist with clerical duties, receptionist duties, data entry, cleaning, maintenance, fundraising and prescription assistance, etc.
